The Grammar Bit!

Read the scintillating sentences opposite. They show the four main types of sentences and the punctuation used to complete them.

  • A statement gives information and normally finishes with a full stop.
  • A question is often a request for information and always finishes with a question mark.
  • A command tells someone to do something and finishes with either a full stop or an exclamation mark.
  • An exclamation expresses a strong emotion or a surprise and always finishes with an exclamation mark.

In every type of sentence, a capital letter is used to start the first word.

With your talk partner, read the sentences opposite again and agree on their sentence type.

Scintillating Sentences

  1. How exactly does a harvest mouse weave its ball-shaped nest from grass?
  2. How lucky the harvest mouse was!
  3. You must hide from that stealthy barn owl!
  4. The harvest mouse has a long, grasping tail that acts like a fifth limb.
