Clip Description

A feral animal is one which lives in the wild, having descended from a farmed (domesticated) animal. In Australia, there are now an estimated 24 million feral pigs roaming the countryside, which is more than Australia’s human population! They are all descended from a small number of pigs that were brought into the country by European settlers in the late 18th Century for their meat.

In this fascinating clip, we learn that feral pigs are creating problems for many animals that are native to the rainforests of Australia. Despite being one of the world’s most dangerous birds, the cassowary is one of the animal species most threatened by the spread of feral pigs. Why exactly are the pigs threatening the cassowaries’ existence? Watch the clip to find out.
