Using some of the words from the Word Wall, write a fourth paragraph that is about how a cheetah moves to catch its prey. Your paragraph should include a topic sentence and two further sentences.
Whiteboard Challenges
The cheetah is well known for several features. It is recognised as the fastest land animal in the world. It can reach 112km/h in just three seconds – that’s faster than a sports car accelerates! Its markings are distinctive too. The cheetah’s fur is covered in solid black spots, and so is their skin! The black fur actually grows out of the black spots on their skin.
The cheetah’s feet have adapted to help it accelerate very quickly. It has semi non-retractable claws (almost like dog claws) that work like studs on a football boot to give the cheetah a lot of grip when it is running. The pads of most cats’ paws are soft but cheetahs’ pads are hard like the rubber on a car tyre. This helps to create additional friction with the ground.
Unlike other “big cats”, a classification that includes lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars, cheetahs don’t roar. They growl when faced with danger or make a high-pitched chirping noise. Cheetahs also bark when communicating with each other.
