Clip Description
The Darwin’s bark spider is a true record breaker. It is able to weave webs that are over two metres in diameter (the largest orb webs in the world). Furthermore, this particular arachnid’s web is made from silk that is twice as strong as the silk of any other spider species. It is the toughest natural fibre on the planet; scientists have discovered that it is tougher than steel!
In this fascinating clip, we are shown how a bark spider is able to construct her web over a river. First, she must spray a 25 metre-long bridging line of silk from one side of the river to the other. Only then will she be able to construct her orb web, which will be suspended from this line. Why doesn’t her first attempt go to plan? Watch the clip to find out.
