Emperor penguins are the largest of all the different kinds of penguin. They spend their entire lives in Antarctica – the world’s southernmost continent – where temperatures can drop to a bone-chilling minus 70 degrees centigrade.

In this fascinating clip, male emperor penguins huddle together in one of the world’s most remarkable feats of endurance. In complete darkness, and without food or water, these incredible, flightless birds must wait out the stormy Antarctic winter. During this time, they are in charge of keeping a single egg safe and warm. What ingenious strategy stops the emperors from freezing to death? Watch the clip to find out.
