• Watch the related clip (below). Although it is the stuff of legend, there is no evidence to suggest that Japanese spider crabs ever dragged sailors overboard! However, this would certainly make for a great mariner’s tale.
• Imagine that you are crab fishing off a harbour in a quiet Cornish town when, all of a sudden, there is an almighty tug on your line. You have caught a spider crab! Write a diary entry that describes this encounter.
• Write a simile poem that describes the appearance, movement and behaviour of spider crabs.
