Clip Description

Unlike most monkeys, geladas spend most of their time on the ground, sitting on their bottoms, eating grass. They are only found in the highlands of Ethiopia, Africa. In fact, their grassland meadows sit at lofty heights, some of which are 2 miles above sea level. At night time, geladas sleep on the cliff ledges below their grazing grounds to avoid predators. They are a herd animal and also go by the name of the bleeding heart monkey. This is due to the distinctive hourglass-shaped red patch of skin on the chests of adult males and females.

In this fascinating clip, beneath a high plateau, young geladas use the rock face as a playground. There are a number of nail-biting moments in the clip when the little daredevils appear to lose their footing, but, fortunately, there are no fatalities. What are the advantages to the youngsters of playing in such a dangerous location? Watch the clip to find out.
