Clip Description

Weighing two to three times heavier than a grey squirrel, Indian giant squirrels (also known as Malabar squirrels) spend most of their lives high up in the canopies of India’s forests and woodlands. When photographs of these creatures recently emerged on social media, some people refused to believe that they were real. With their purplish (maroon-coloured) fur and soft toy appearance, this reaction isn’t at all surprising.

In this fascinating clip, the jackfruit, the largest fruit in the world, has attracted the attention of a troop of macaques. However, with their tough skins, only the ripest fruits are accessible. Fortunately, help is on hand when an Indian giant squirrel turns up on the scene. Having an incredible sense of smell, the clever rodent knows in an instant which ones are ripe and which ones are not. With such a banquet in the offing, the stakes are high. The squirrel won’t give up the jackfruit without a fight! Who do you think will be victorious? Watch the clip to find out.
