Headlight beetles are mesmerising creatures, who light up parts of their body using something called ‘bioluminescence.’ They use their light to attract and entice prey into their waiting jaws. The largest and brightest of the bioluminescent insects, headlight beetles can reach four centimetres in length and glow with a brightness of around one-fortieth of that of a candle.
In this fascinating clip, we meet the babies, or larvae, of the headlight beetle as they light up termite mounds in an effort to capture newly-hatched flying insects. Will their glowing bodies have the desired effect? Will dinner be served? Watch the clip to find out.
