Clip Description

With a wingspan between 55cm and 70cm, the sparrowhawk is one of the smallest birds of prey in the UK. It is perfectly adapted to hunt in small spaces and is a common visitor to household gardens, where it preys on songbirds such as thrushes, sparrows and wrens. They will occasionally eat bats.

In this fascinating clip, we meet a sparrowhawk on the hunt for dinner. Because this raptor isn’t built for pursuit or the long chase, it must use stealth and explosive acceleration to catch its prey. How do you think this impressive bird uses its tail to control and manoeuvre its body through tight spaces whilst flying at great speed? Watch the clip to find out.
