Further Challenges

  • A blue whale’s diet consists mainly of krill. Krill are tiny shrimp-like creatures. Although their size can vary, most krill measure between 1 and 6 centimetres in length. How many krill, each measuring 5 centimetres and lined up head to tail, would measure the same length as a blue whale that was 30 metres in length?
  • Study the line graph on the British Sea Fishing website that shows what happened to the global population of blue whales between 1880 and 2010. Use the graph as a starting point to find out more about the whaling industry and what is being done to increase current whale populations.
