2 - The Problem

The Problem

The distance between a leopard and a baboon is 1.5 km.

A tree, which is between the two animals, is four times further from the leopard than it is from the baboon.

How far away from the tree is the leopard?

How far away from the tree is the baboon?

Compare how your workings out to a partner’s. What was the same? What was different?

Did you Know?

A male baboon can have canine teeth that measure 5 cm in length. They are used to intimidate rival males. They are also used as weapons to attack prey and for self defence.

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

Johannes said, “The baboon is 375m from the tree as that is one quarter of the distance.”

Do you agree with Johannes? Explain your reasoning to a partner.
