KS2 Maths Lessons: Measurement (money)

The Problem

Mr Goldfinger had been given permission to pan for gold in a Scottish stream. After a great deal of patience, he was excited to discover 5 pieces of gold in his pan! The gold was a mixture of small, medium-sized and large nuggets. After weighing the nuggets, he calculated that their total value was £68.70.

Using the nugget price chart (opposite), can you work out how many nuggets of each size Mr Goldfinger found?

Compare your methodology to a friend’s. What was the same? What was different?

Did you know?

Gold is present in small quantities in almost every sophistcated electrical device such as smart phones, TVs and computers. This is because gold has many useful properties. It is an excellent conductor of electricity, it does not corrode and it can be shaped easily.

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

Reem said, “I know that 3 of the 5 pieces of gold in Mr Goldfinger’s pan cannot be large nuggets.”

Do you agree with Reem? How do you know?
