Clip Description
Bats are the only true flying mammals in the world. The majority of bats (like all UK bats) are microbats – small bat species that hunt insects during the night. Megabats, on the other hand, include much larger bat species and prefer snacking on fruit, nectar, and pollen. Some of the largest megabats, like the great flying fox, can have a wingspan of up to 1 m 80 cm. These bats live in the tropics, where they hang out in trees.
In this fascinating clip, millions of megabats (called straw-coloured fruit bats) have travelled great distances to feast on mangoes and other ripe fruit in Zambia’s Kasanka National Park. How much fruit might a single straw-coloured fruit bat eat in a single night? Watch the clip to find out.
