Number (multiplication and division): Mud Nets
The Problem
Off the coast of Florida, Beaky (the bottle-nosed dolphin) made three mud nets by beating his tail against the sea bed. In the second mud net, there was double the number of fish than in the first mud net. In the third mud net, there was double the number of fish than in the second mud net.
If Beaky caught 112 fish in total, how many fish were caught in each of the three mud nets?
Did you know?
Although the average lifespan of a dolphin is about 17 years, some can live up to 50 years!
Visualising the Problem and Getting Started
Look at the 3 mud nets below. They are labelled A, B and C.
1) How many fish are trapped in mud net A?
2) If double the number of fish are trapped in mud net B than mud net A, how many fish are trapped in mud net B?
3) If double the number of fish are trapped in mud net C than mud net B, how many fish are trapped altogether?
