Spot the Mistake!
A girl called Saffi looked at the bar chart opposite with great interest.
Saffi said, “I’ve used column addition to work out that 4,647 foxes and squirrels were sighted in the woodland altogether.”
What mistake did Saffi make?
Did you know?
Britain has three resident woodpecker species: the great spotted woodpecker, lesser spotted woodpecker and green woodpecker. Green woodpeckers (photographed) have a loud, laughing-like call. Because of this, its nickname is the ‘yaffle bird’. Woodpeckers have a super long, sticky tongue for reaching insects that are inside the holes that they peck out.
Whiteboard Challenges
This bar chart shows the types of mammal and the number of each that were sighted in a large broadleaved woodland over a 2-year period.
1) Which animal was sighted the most?
2) What is the difference between the amount of badgers sighted and the amount of deer sighted?
3) Is the combined total of wood mouse and squirrel sightings more or less than the combined total of fox and deer sightings?
