Further Challenges

  • The Deca Tree is a fabulous problem-solving activity on the NRICH website that will get you thinking about trees, branches and leaves whilst using and applying a variety of number skills and knowledge.
  • As with all maple trees, the sap of the field maple (the UK’s only native maple tree species) can be used to make sweet maple syrup. A maple tree must be 30 years old before it can have its sap extracted and made into syrup. It takes around 40 gallons of maple sap to produce just 1 gallon of syrup.

If Matthew has 200 gallons of maple sap, how many litres of syrup can he produce?
