Have you ever stretched up high to reach something? Plants do the same as they compete for sunlight. Sunlight gives them the energy they need to make food through photosynthesis. In crowded forests or jungles, plants race to grow taller than their neighbours, spreading wide leaves to catch every bit of light they can. Without sunlight, plants cannot survive.
