Spider crabs gather by the thousands in the Southern Ocean along Australia’s coastline, forming a spectacular procession as they march across seagrass plains. This gathering happens during molting, when the crabs shed their old shells to allow new ones to grow. Though vulnerable during this process, their large numbers provide protection against predators.
