Atlantic salmon return to the rivers in which they were born to lay or fertilise eggs. This epic journey follows a lifetime of feeding and escaping predators in the open ocean. For some salmon, this is a round trip of 4,800 kilometres! The salmon use their keen sense of smell to navigate back to their birthplace, often overcoming numerous obstacles such as waterfalls and strong currents. Once they reach their spawning grounds, they perform a remarkable feat of endurance, swimming upstream to lay their eggs in the gravel beds of freshwater streams.
