National Writing Day Activities: Year 3 Writing Activities

Lemur

Lemurs are primates. In the wild, they can only be found on the African island of Madagascar and some of the tiny islands around it. Lemurs use their hands and feet to move nimbly through the trees, but cannot grip with their tails as some other primates can. Ring-tailed lemurs are perhaps the most recognisable, with their long, vividly striped, black-and-white tail. There are over 100 different species of lemur!

In this clip, we will see many of the different types of lemur that inhabit Madagascar. Which is your favourite and why?

Writing Activity

✍️ Write an acrostic poem about lemurs, where the first letter of each line spells out LEMUR.

Example:

Leaping through forests with grace and flair,
Eyes wide and bright with a curious stare.
Madagascar’s jewels, in trees they roam,
Unique in their calls, their island home.
Ringed tails held high, they dance in the light.

Take it Further

A new species of lemur has just been discovered in Madagascar!
Your task is to design a fact file about this lemur that includes the following details:

  • A drawing of what it looks like

  • Its habitat (where it lives)

  • Its physical features (what it looks like)

  • Its diet (what it eats)

  • Its behaviour (how it acts)
