Clip Description

Mandarin ducks are unusual as they make their nests in tree hollows – not on water like most other ducks. Originally from the Far East (China and Japan), these brightly-coloured ducks began to breed in the wild nearly one hundred years ago after escaping from captivity.

In this fascinating clip, we meet a mother mandarin duck, who has to teach her day-old babies to fly. She does this by leaping out of the tree where they are nesting, expecting them to follow her.
