Extending sentences with when, if, because, although: echidna

Read the sentences opposite. The words highlighted in bold are conjunctions.These special ‘gluey’ words are used to connect two clauses together.
You’ll notice that for sentences 1B, 2B and 3B, a conjunction has been used to create a single sentence from two separate sentences (or main clauses).
You may have noticed that these gluey words can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. With your talk partner, explore reading each sentence aloud with the conjunction in a different place.
Scintillating Sentences
A) The echidna had to leave his meal quickly. The ants were biting back!
1B) The echidna had to leave his meal quickly because the ants were biting back!
2A) The echidna used his beak to uncover his dinner. The furious ants climbed up into his fur.
2B) When the echidna used his beak to uncover his dinner, the furious ants climbed up into his fur.
3A) The echidna is a mammal. It lays eggs.
3B) The echidna is a mammal although it lays eggs.
Did you know?
After hatching from its egg, a baby echidna (called a ‘puggle’) is carried around in its mother’s pouch until it starts to develop spines.
