Writing Ideas

  • Once young kingfishers leave the family nest burrow, they must fend for themselves. Parents don’t teach their young how to fish. Using the main clip to help you, write a set of instructions that will help a young kingfisher hunt and catch its food.
  • You are a kingfisher estate agent. You have an ideal tunnel set in a high river bank next to a quiet, peaceful river that is full of fish. Write an advert for this fantastic home to attract a kingfisher to buy it!
  • Kingfishers are strong, beautiful and determined little birds. They are majestic – kings of the fishers! Write a poem about a kingfisher, using your most imaginative, descriptive words. Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane’s The Lost Words has a wonderful page on the common kingfisher which you could use as a source of inspiration.
