Demarcating Sentences: black bear
The Grammar Bit!
Read the scintillating sentences opposite. They show the four main types of sentences and the punctuation used to complete them.
- A statement gives information and normally finishes with a full stop.
- A question is often a request for information and always finishes with a question mark.
- A command tells someone to do something and finishes with either a full stop or an exclamation mark.
- An exclamation expresses a strong emotion or a surprise and always finishes with an exclamation mark.
In every type of sentence, a capital letter is used to start the first word.
With your talk partner, read the sentences opposite again and agree on their sentence type.
Scintillating Sentences
1) Have you heard that a black bear’s sense of smell is seven times more sensitive than a dog’s?
2) Never place food inside your tent and always keep your pepper spray close to hand.
3) Those crabs look very tasty!
4) Due to the rising tide, the mother bear must keep a close eye on her young cubs.

Although they are called black bears, their coats can be blue-grey or blue-black, brown and even sometimes white!
