Writing Ideas

  • There is a famous narrative poem called The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge where a sailor kills an albatross and experiences a lot of bad luck as a result. Write your own poem where a sailor saves an albatross and experiences good luck as a result.
  • Albatrosses can glide for hours on the wind and currents in the air. Imagine you are an albatross gliding through the sky. What can you see? Hear? Smell? Write a description of the experience. (Listen to Albatross by Fleetwood Mac as you carry out your writing task.)
  • Imagine that you are the mother albatross on your travels hunting for food. Write a letter to your baby reassuring them that you’re safe and will be home soon. Tell them about your journey and any adventures you have had on the way.
