  • Read the Sponge Haiku by Bryony Stubbs. Discuss the meaning behind each line. “Suffocated and Lifeless …” What image does this line create? Does it teach us anything new about this remarkable creature? Now use your own knowledge of sea sponges to create your own haiku (or series of linked haikus).
  • Imagine that you were one of the shrimps featured in the main clip, who was trapped inside a deep-sea sponge. You have just witnessed a crime unfold in the open-ocean, but were unable to come to the aid of the victim. Write a detailed account of what you saw, heard and felt in a diary entry.
  • Find out about the human threats to sponges by reading the National Geographic blog. Create an informative poster that will draw attention to these threats.
