Someone has made a mistake in their column subtraction. Can you explain the mistake to your talk partner?

Mudbaths help elephants cool down under the harsh African sun. Furthermore, a layer of mud helps to protect an elephant’s skin from the sun’s harmful rays and from insect bites.

Use PAWS, counters and column subtraction to solve the following word problem.

There were 235 elephants at a waterhole. Of these,156 elephants were cooling off in the water by squirting water over themselves and splashing around. The remaining elephants were wallowing in mud on the banks of the waterhole.

How many elephants were wallowing in mud at this waterhole?
