Clip Description

Fossils are the remains of plants or animals that lived a long time ago. They give scientists clues about life in prehistoric times, long before humans roamed the planet.

In this fascinating clip, Sir David Attenborough shares his excitement at discovering the fossilised remains of an ammonite. These marine creatures could be found swimming in the oceans of the world 200 million years ago, during what is known as the Jurassic period. They became extinct at roughly the same time as the dinosaurs disappeared, which was around 66 million years ago.

Ammonites varied greatly in size. The largest ammonites reached almost 3 metres in length. The smallest ammonites were less than 2 centimetres in length.

Can you find something in your classroom that is as long as the largest ammonites?
