Column subtraction 4: Lesson 1: bison

3 - Whiteboard Challenges

Spot the Mistake!

Someone has made a mistake in their column subtraction. Can you explain the mistake to your talk partner?

Did you know?

Bison have been hunted through the centuries for many different reasons. Native Americans hunted them for their meat (to eat), skin (to make clothes) and sinews (which they used to make bow strings). European settlers killed bison so that they could defeat the Native Americans (who relied on the bison to survive). They also killed them for their skins, tongues and bones.

Use PAWS, counters and column subtraction to solve the following word problem.

In 1868, a man (nicknamed Buffalo Bill) killed 1,732 American bison so that their meat could be fed to railroad workers. Of these bison, 534 were aged between 10 and 15 years. The remaining bison were aged between 15 and 20 years.

How many bison aged between 15 and 20 years did Buffalo Bill kill in 1868?
