Prior learning: 4-digit column addition with more than one exchange

Use PAWS and column addition to solve the following word problem.

Over 100 birdwatchers had gathered on the Somerset Levels to watch a starling murmuration. 24,375 starlings flew in from the west and merged with a flock of 9,452 starlings, who had flown in from the east. They performed an incredible murmuration that lasted for several minutes.

How many starlings were displaying in this particular flock?

Did you know?

In the UK, a starling murmuration usually takes place above their roosting (sleeping) site in the fading light. Experts still aren’t completely sure how each starling knows which way to turn without bumping into another starling!
