Special Days in June Activities: World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day

Did you know?
From outer space, Earth looks like a stunning blue marble – over 70% of its surface is covered by oceans. These vast waters are full of life, from microscopic zooplankton to the blue whale, the largest animal ever to have lived. Beneath the waves, spider crabs march across the seafloor, giant trevally fish leap from the sea to snatch birds mid-air and Portuguese man o’ wars float with stinging tentacles. The ocean is Earth’s greatest mystery – scientists estimate up to 91% of marine species remain unidentified, with over 2,000 new species discovered each year.
Recommended Activities:
✍️ Choose a teacher, friend or family member and create a short quiz (5–7 questions)with the aim of matching their personality and interests to a sea creature. Once you’ve done this, make a fact file of the creature with its name, picture and key facts. Click here for an example.
🎨 Recreate just the wave from The Great Wave of Kanagawa using watercolour paint, felt pens or mixed media. Add your own environmental message by including details like plastic waste or an oil spill from a ship.
