Worms eat soil. Their nutrition comes from the things in the soil such as dead plant material, fruits and vegetables. Accidently, they swallow millions of micro-organisms that live in the soil such as nematodes and protozoa.

Use PAWS and column addition to solve the following word problem.

On its way to a compost bin, a large earthworm swallowed 22,348 micro-organisms as soil passed through its gut. Once it was in the compost bin, it swallowed 28,361 micro-organisms on day one, 23,256 micro-organisms on day two and 19,049 micro-organisms on day three.

How many micro-organisms did the earthworm swallow in total on days one and three?
